James Arnold, of Cowes, was summoned for assaulting Frederick
Hamilton, who stated that on the 24th ult. he was on Shooters-hill
when defendant came along and, without any provocation being given, struck him
a violent blow on the eye. - Defendant said complainant accused him of
slandering his mother and struck the first blow; Complainant denied this;
The Chairman said there were six previous convictions against defendant.
The Bench fined him 10s. with 9s. costs.

IW County Press 31/05/1890, An Interesting Event - Niton
On Wednesday last, Mrs Peach, of Rectory-road, Niton, presented
her husband with triplets - two girls and a boy. The latter has since died,
but the others are doing well.

IW County Press 30/08/1890. Fatal Burning - Ryde
The girl Alice Wade, who was severely burnt a fortnight since
through her clothes catching fire and was removed to the infirmary, died there
yesterday morning.

We hear that the Northern Accident Insurance Company, have through their local
agent (Mr F.Farrand of the the Ryde Gasworks), paid 500pounds
to Mrs Trim, widow of the late Mr E.Trim,
who met with his death through accidentally falling down the steps at the County
Cricket Ground, Shanklin.

died last week at the residence of his son, in London.

Col, Fenn of Danebury-villas, is leaving Ventnor to take
command of the regimental district of Halifax, Yorkshire.

Mr Charley Burt, the celebrated Island athlete and champion
hurdle racer, added another to his long list of honours on Monday last, when
he won the 120 yards hurdle race held in connection with the sports at Dean
Park Cricket Ground, Bournmouth. There were 12 competitors, amongst whom were
several formidable opponents. Mr Burt is to be warmly congratulated upon
this addition to his long list of brilliant achievements.

Mary Elizabeth McFarlane , 12 years old, of Cowes, who
was last week convicted of simple larceny, was now ordered to be sent to the
Dorset Industrial School for three years, the Chairman saying he hoped she would
be a good girl there.

A little boy named Thomas, son of Mr W. Thomas,
of this town, while at play on the Esplanade fell over the sea wall just to
the east of the Pier, breaking his left arm above the elbow. The poor
little fellow was taken home in a donkey chair and the broken limb was set.
He is, we hear, progressing well towards recovery.

IW County Press 11/03/1893. The First Marriage - East Cowes
The Wesleyan Church has just been licensed for marriages and the first ceremony
of the kind took place in the church on Wednesday morning last. The happy
pair were Mr Joseph Mitchell of Buckland, near Portsmouth and
Miss Ellen Flora McDonald of East Cowes and the proceedings
were conducted by the Rev. W.Hunter, the superintendent of
the circuit, before a full congregation. The church was effectively decorated.
This being the first wedding in the church, Mr Camp, one of
the trustees, presented the bride and bridegroom with a Bible and hymns bound
in one book, in morocco. At the commencement of the service the hymn "The
voice that breathed o'er Eden" was sung and at the close Miss Chiverton,
who presided at the organ, played the wedding march.

IW County Press 23/11/1895. Newport Borough Police Station
Charles Drower, a married labourer, of Gunville, was charged with
unlawfully wounding Mrs Cecilia Toogood, hawker of Newport. It appeared
from the statement of prosecutrix, whose left hand was bandaged, that just before
10 on the previous Wednesday, she left the Cutter's Arms, Carisbrooke, where
she had been drinking with the prisoner and others, and proceeded homewards.
When she got near St Johns church, Newport, prisoner stopped her and seizing
her by the jacket near the neck, asked her for his watch which she denied having.
In the struggle prisoner threw her down and taking out a large pocket-knife,
threatened to cut her throat......

Alfred Riggs, 22, a coloured mariner, was sentenced to
three months hard labour for unlawfully wounding William
Sweetman, a shipmate on board the brig "Ebenezer", at
Cowes on the 22nd ult., by striking him on the head with a marling spike during
a quarrel.

Case was presented by the husband Mr Charles Hamilton Faulkner
of the Swiss Cottage, Blackwater, praying for the disolution of his marriage
on the ground of the alleged misconduct of his wife Rosa Annie Faulkner,
with Josiah Edward Haynes, road surveyor to the RDC ......

IW Times & Hampshire Gazette 25/06/1896 Bathing Accident
On Saturday afternoon a Croydon lad named Harry St. Clair Parker,
aged 15, receiving private tuition at the Rectory, Niton, was drowned off Niton.
The unfortunate boy went with two companions to bathe, and getting out of his
depth his young friends were unable to rescue him. The body was recovered on
Sunday by James Barham, fisherman. The inquest was held on Monday, a
verdict of "Accidental death" was recorded.

William Eldridge, 60, a carpenter of Wroxall, who pleaded
guilty to attempting to commit suicide by cutting his throat, saying he had
been worried through being out of work, was bound over to come up for judgement
when required.

Fred Cogger, 16, East Cowes, indicted for stealing a prize
fowl, value 10/6, belonging to John Fowle of Bouldner near
Yarmouth on the 13th July, was sentenced to 14 days imprisonment, a previous
conviction being proved.

George Kerswell junior, 21, shoemaker, was sentenced to six
weeks hard labour, for obtaining by false pretences, from Samuel Butt
at Ryde, on the 16th inst., 2 pairs of mens boots value 13/-

George Henry Gilbert, 32 Church-street, Swanmore, was summoned to
show cause why an order should not be made on him to contribute towards the
maintenance of his son in the Cornwall Reformatory School, Purfleet, Essex.
-- Supt Hinks said defendant had agreed to pay 3s. a week, but had got
into arrears to the amount of £2.2s......

Miss Maud Santley, better know in Ryde as Miss Kate
Stainer, who toured the provinces with Madame Adelina Patti
last autumn, has been re-engaged to sing at the Patti concert
in the Albert-hall on Thursday next.
