Trooper F.DENHAM has been presented with a handsome briar-pipe, silver-mounted
and engraved, by the Newport Volunteer Fire-Brigade, of which he was a member,
on the occasion of his approaching departure for the seat of war with the Island
contingent of the Imperial Yeomanry.

IW County Press 14/06/1902 - County Petty Sessions
Frederick F. Ewens, labourer of Pound-lane, Ventnor,
was charged with persistent cruelty to his wife, Ellen Ewens, who asked
for a separation and maintenance order. -- Complainant said that on the previous
Sunday night defendant knocked her about and she had to protect herself as best
she could. He had assaulted her on several occasions and she had been obliged
to leave him. She had two children under 16. She went out to work for a living.
She did not know what her husband earned. He was formerly guard on a coach, but
now did anything. He often threatened her......

IW County Press 14/06/1902 - County Petty Sessions
John Jelley, a postman, of Shanklin, was charged
with persistent cruelty to his wife, Alice Jelley, who asked for a separation
and maintenance order. -- Complainant said she had been married to defendant for
18 years and until some eight months ago had lived at Redhill. She had had nothing
but trouble since she was married. Soon after she was married defendant kicked
her downstairs and about 14 years ago broke her nose. Three months before they
left Redhill they had a little argument and because she did not agree with him
he struck her three blows in the eye. Three times recently he had assaulted her......

Mr W. H. Griffin has been presented with a silver-mounted pipe by the
members of the Ryde Fire Brigade on resigning after 12 years membership.

postman, Ryde
On Monday morning, at the Post-office, Mr Joseph Coyne was presented
with a timepiece from his comrades on the occasion of his retirement from the
service on reaching the age limit. Senior Postman Attrill made the presentation.

Read a letter from the Steam Roller Driver, C.Sheath, asking for an
increase in his wages. The committee recommended that his wages be increased from
30s. to 33s. weekly.

IW County Press 13/06/1903 - Colonial Appointment
Mr George Bright, chief clerk at the Ryde Post-office, has accepted
an appointment under the Transvaal Government, with the addition of a junior clerkship
for his son. Mr Bright's period of service in Ryde has been a long one,
extending over 26 years and for the past 17 years he has held the post of chief
clerk.......

Mr Ernest Dudley Croucher, the fourth son of Capt F.J.Croucher,
today sails for Canada, where he will take up the farming occupation.

The "Argus" of Melbourne, Australia, announces the golden wedding
celebration on July 28th, of Mr & Mrs Mercer, the latter of whom is
the youngest daughter of the late Mr Stephen Day of Ventnor.
